How does the Army works???
Between 1960 and 2000 more than 10 military officers have been sentenced to death for mutiny, including Major General Mamman Vatsa, Col Dimka, Major Gideon Okah and others.
Some months ago some soldiers attempted to kill their General Commanding Officer after some of their colleagues were killed during an ambush by the Boko Haram terrorist group. The soldiers fired shots at the General and his body guards who narrowly escaped death.
They were since arrested and arraigned before a court martial which found 13 out of the 18 arrested soldiers, guilty; 12 were sentenced to death, 1 sentenced to 28 days imprisonment with hard labor while the rest 5 were not found guilty of the offense.
Many Nigerians have been worried over the development and most, just like Funmi Iyanda are asking for leniency on the convicted soldiers.
One of the convicted soldiers is the only
son of a surviving widow, while another is the father of a
five month old baby.
For many Nigerians, killing these soldiers will only compound the problems of insurgency in the country and it may just be another victory for the terrorists.
