15 Houses, Properties Worth Millions of Naira Destroyed After High Tension Wire Fall in Lagos

A high tension wire that fell on top of several houses caused extensive fire catastrophe in Ejigbo area of Lagos State, western Nigeria, last night.

The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. when a heavy rainstorm started sweeping away everything in its path including high tension wire that have fallen off the loose wooden poles. According to the residents of Ejigbo area, one of the locals, Baba Sadiq, who tried to save his family was electrocuted to death, at least 15 houses was razed down and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Besides the damage caused by the fallen high tension wire, the transformer exploded, devastating the property in Oboye, Fashola, Shawande, Aminatu, Ilo and others streets. Some of the residents with injuries of varying degree of severity were rushed to a local a hospital for treatment.
The residents blame officials of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, for negligence and refusing to replace the wooden poles with concrete ones after the previous similar accident happened in 2012. This morning the police from Ejigbo station were seen walking around to assess the extent of damage, however, the PHCN officials had not visited the scene of the incident so far.
