Gunmen Wreck Havoc In Lagos Community


Dawodu Lane in Ilogbo Community along Apapa Road in Ebute-Meta, Lagos State, was on Monday, thrown into shock after gunmen stormed the community and killed one person, and burnt about four houses.


A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the assailants attacked the community at about 9:00 p.m.
 

In a reaction to the incident, some youths of the community have equipped themselves with dangerous weapons like cutlasses and guns, while some residents have already started moving out of the area over fear of another attack.
 
Responding, the community leader's wife, Titilayo Ajose, told journalists that about 20 families were currently staying in the palace following the attack.
 
She said that the people who came to the palace around 10:pm were mostly women and children, and pointed out that the crisis in the community posed a huge challenge.
Ajose, popularly known as Ope-Oluwa, further revealed that there was always shooting and looting during such attacks.

"We cannot still identify who the attackers are and their mission or grievances. The attackers are unknown gunmen" she said. "We have sacrificed several times to the gods to end these attacks but all to no avail. We want peace in Ilogbo Community. We want the police to station their men on the streets in the community. People are afraid to open their shops or go out at night".
 
According to a resident, who gave her name as Rafuat Ado, the heavily armed assailants invaded her home at about 9:00 p.m.
 
"They sprayed petrol over our house and other buildings around it and set them on fire. The arrival of the police saved us from being killed" Ado said. "The police escorted us to the palace where we slept with other families".
 
Since 2013, the Ilogbo Community has been experiencing crisis. It would be recalled that one Kunle Awotunde, a leader of the APC was killed last month when the community was attacked.
 
DSP. Ngozi Braide, the states police command spokesperson confirmed the incident.
 
She disclosed that police officers attached to the Iponri Divisional Headquarters arrested ten people in connection with the attack at about 1.30 a.m. in Otto area of Ebute-Meta.
 
"The suspects will be screened and those found culpable will be prosecuted" Braide said.
She said that the police had intensified patrol in the area in order to curb any attack.
